Week 1 – Overview of Equine Assisted Services

This session provides a clear understanding of the difference between equine facilitated learning (EFL), therapy (EFT) and psychotherapy (EFP), and how the work differs from and works well alongside more traditional EFL/T activities with horses (i.e. Pony Club, equestrian disciplines, RDA and BHS including ‘Changing Lives’). Examples of different ways in which EFL can engage with local communities and either run as a stand-alone activity or be combined with riding or vaulting programmes. The session begins to surface how equine facilitated learning, therapy and psychotherapy can be good for horses and humans.

Week 2 – Managing Anxiety through being with horses

with input from experience Equine Facilitated Occupational Therapist, Rhona, this session provides an understanding of the sensory system and the how simply being in the presence of a horse can reduce arousal levels. It explains how being with horses can ease anxiety in humans and provides opportunities to practice observation skills and body awareness techniques. There is also opportunity for discussion around insights on self awareness and safe practice basics for groundwork exercises.

Week 3 – Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy

Mike Delaney


Led by award winning author and trauma and addiction specialist, Mike Delaney, this session provides insights around how equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) can be significantly more effective in supporting complex PTSD and trauma than more traditional talking therapies.
