Inner-city riding school, Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, embraced the Olympic spirit this July with an equestrian Diversity Olympics Games.
Based in central London, The British Horse Society (BHS) Approved Centre brought together children and adults from the local community with this week-long event.
The jam-packed games started with a torch relay and ended with a closing ceremony, with each participant receiving their very own gold medal. The week featured a variety of equestrian activities tailored to the abilities of the participants, including those taking part in the BHS’s Changing Lives through Horses programme.
From interactive lead-rein exercises to ridden performances, each activity was designed to be inclusive and adaptive. It was an opportunity for everyone to celebrate their achievements and accomplish an individual goal.
The event was also a testament to the power of horses and how they play an important role in positively impacting personal growth, physical fitness and well-being. Each participant not only showcased the skills they have learnt, but also the lasting connections they have built with the horses.
Sarah Dale, Head of Business Support at the BHS comments: “It’s been great to see the local community come together at Wormwood Scrubs, to celebrate this Diversity Olympics event. The week has been a powerful reminder of how truly incredible that bond between humans and horses is. It has been heartwarming to see the joy in all those who have taken part, as well as the confidence they have gained.”
Sister Mary-Joy is the founder of Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre and played a critical role in organising this event: “It’s been wonderful to see all our participants get involved in our week-long Olympics event. So many of the young people who visit Wormwood have gained such confidence, learnt key responsibilities and importantly, found their feet during their time with us. It is the horses that continue to make this all possible. They are changing lives, and it is brilliant to watch.”
Running for over 30 years, the London-based riding school continues to provide a safe environment for children and adults alike to flourish. It provides a perfect example of the positive impact horses can have on people from all backgrounds and of all abilities.
The BHS remains committed to supporting centres such as Wormwood Scrubs, playing a role in protecting the special horse/human relationship. Along with making sure that every horse enjoys a happy and healthy life with us all.
