The SPILLERS™ brand has donated £5,000 of strip grazing equipment to Redwings Horse Sanctuary to help some of the charity’s ‘rounder’ residents battle the bulge!
The Battle of the Bulge campaign is part of the SPILLERS brand’s partnership with the charity to help end equine obesity by 2035. It builds on the brand’s ongoing education efforts through the SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club, to spread awareness, empower owners, and make a tangible difference in the lives of horses and ponies. The aim is to raise awareness about the risks of equine obesity, educate owners on identifying excess weight, and provide practical solutions to reduce calorie intake.
“Earlier this year we asked members to vote on how they would like us to spend £5,000 to help provide support for overweight residents at Redwings, said Bella Fricker, Project Lead at Mars Horsecare, home of the SPILLERS brand. “The provision of strip grazing supplies was chosen as the winning project and we were delighted to donate strip grazing equipment to the value of £5000 to help the Redwings team manage their weight watchers.”
A study conducted in association with the SPILLERS™ brand found that strip grazing can be an effective way of restricting grass intake to help manage the bodyweight of pastured ponies. Follow-up research highlighted the advantages of consistent nutrient intake that may be offered by strip grazing, shedding light on why strip grazing may be an effective weight management tool.
Amy Honey, the Weight Management Coordinator at Redwings Horse Sanctuary has been instrumental in helping to set up the Battle of the Bulge campaign with the SPILLERS brand.
Amy said: “We are so grateful to SPILLERS and everyone who has been involved in the Battle of the Bulge campaign for this donation. It will enable us to make a real difference to the horses and ponies in Redwings’ care. Weight management is such an important issue that has big welfare implications for horses, whether they be in Sanctuary care or privately owned, and we’re so happy to be working with SPILLERS on raising awareness, and for their support in helping us to tackle it amongst our herds.”
She added: “Strip grazing is a really important management tool for us at Redwings, allowing the teams to continually adjust the amount of grazing available according to the condition of the horses and ponies.”
