Learn why taking your horse’s temperature regularly is so important. In this video you’ll learn how to do it safely, whether it’s your first time using a digital thermometer, or the just the first time with a particular horse. Team GB Eventer, Piggy March, is joined by Redwings’ Behaviour Manager to discuss how to make it a rewarding experience for you and your horse.

Temperature checking is at the heart of this year’s Strangles Awareness Week Campaign because horses tend to develop fever first and typically become infectious to other horses 2-3 days later. This gives us a golden window of opportunity to prevent spread and minimise the scale of an outbreak – which can be devastating to yards and owners. It’s impossible to tell which horses will recover easily and which will face complications so minimising spread is vitally important.

Take the #TempCheckChallenge to get to know your horse’s healthy resting temperature, gain confidence in the procedure, and make it a habit if you are moving and mixing or have new horses arriving on your yard. – https://www.redwings.org.uk/tempchecker

With the help of International Event Rider Piggy March and Equine Behaviourist, Sarah Hallsworth from Redwings Horse Sanctuary, we hope to give people the confidence to take up the challenge even if they have never taken a horse’s temperature before.
